Training

From the Ground Up!

Why do I start on the Ground?

I have a chance to introduce myself and explain more clearly my intention in a way the horse can understand. My job is to act as the horse's mentor - I will be challenging them, but at the same time supporting and guiding them through each task.

Of course most of us love riding horses, and the idea is not to stay on the ground but to link this to the ridden work!

The point of the groundwork is not the individual exercises but instead the principles we are giving the horse, and to allow us to make a connection.

We are training the mind and body of the horse to allow them to perform at their best under saddle. Horses are the most generous of animals but they perform at their best when they are not pushed but asked in a way which they can understand. The more our horses ‘know',  the less we have to ‘manage’.

I trained with Tristan Tucker and I implement his TRT method to help horses cope with our human world. We are giving the horse the ability to control their posture to allow them to self manage their natural instincts. In nature a horse is a flight animal, and their priority is staying alive! To do this they need to be able find food and run away fast. Our horses now exist in a manmade world which they often perceive to be full of potential threats and predators, but they don't have to cope with only their basic instincts. Instead we can teach them how to manage themselves to feel more relaxed and to be able to cope with the spooky objects which surround them!

It is not about showing the horse every possible danger, but teaching them a way to approach things which they find scary in a way which empowers and relaxes them.

What can I help you and your horse with?

  • Trailer Loading

  • Starting Young Horses

  • Teaching your horse to park themselves at the mounting block - never struggle to get on alone again!

  • Training the mind and body of your horse for a relaxed performance

  • Restarting Horses which have become dangerous to ride - giving the horse an opportunity to find peace and to enjoy ridden work again

  • Inspiring Energy in those horses which don't naturally love the arena
  • Dressage in hand - introducing higher level movements

  • Double Lunging - the closest to riding from the ground, an excellent way to introduce greater extension and collection without the weight of the rider, and helpful used in Rehabilitation.

  • Overcome a horses jumping fear, or refusal habit - the double clear is in your grasp!
